INSIDE SCOOP

salon speak

Here are some of the odd things you might hear while trying on dresses—and what they mean.

“Let’s get your hollow-to-hem measurement”

She wants to see how long your dress should be. The “hollow” is the little divot, or dimple, at the base of the front of your neck. She’s planning to measure from just below that to where you want the finished hem of your dress to fall.

“This can probably be let out”

If the dress is a bit snug, the idea here is to make it bigger by using the fabric from the seams. Get it? You “let” the fabric “out” of the seams.

“Let’s add a modesty panel”

A modesty panel is a swatch of fabric (usually made from the same fabric as the bodice of your gown) that’s sewn into the bustline of a particularly revealing gown. It’s a nice way for the salesperson or seamstress to let you know that you’re showing a bit too much cleavage.
